I should have been sewing - but I went on Radio 2 instead!
How I got on Radio 2 with Vernon Kay.
Fellow northerner Vernon Kay has always been someone I've followed, liked and listened to. I remember his very early days on TV and he's become a background to my everyday weekday mornings.
His quiz Ten to the Top replaced the really popular Ken Bruce quiz Pop Master and I play along with mostly a very low table position. So I surprised even myself when one day I rang up the number and asked to be a contestant!
What is Vernon Kay's Ten to the Top?
It's a quiz show on BBC Radio 2 about pop music - mostly from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Two of the questions have musical cues attached and there is always a guess the year question. I'm always impressed when people guess that correctly!
How do you play the BBC Radio 2 pop quiz Ten to the Top?
There are 2 contestants each will be asked 10 questions, each question is worth points based on it's number. Question 1 - worth 1 point, Question 5 - worth 5 points. There is a chance to double points by playing your Joker.
The winner is the one with the most points!
If it's a tie, then a tie break question is asked - a number based question such as how many weeks did an album spend at Number 1 - and the nearest answer wins.
Best bits - Chatting with Vernon and making him laugh!
You can tell I didn't win else that would have been the title for this segment! I got a couple of answers correct and I honestly think the other persons questions were a bit easier. I'm sticking to that story!
I did however have a lovely chat with Vernon on the radio and I made him laugh! When you apply they ask you for some interesting bits of information to chat about on air. My former career in footwear and my love of custard came up, among other things but these were what they asked me and I think I sounded OK. And now I'm looking for sponsorship from Ambrosia Custard! I think I might be their biggest fan!
So how did I make Vernon Kay laugh?
I don't think it will translate well in to words on a screen - you'll have to listen. But I answered a question 'Yvonne Travolta' as I had got no clue of the answer so I just said something. Lots of 'err's' and 'I don't know's' doesn't make for great listening so at least I filled the airwaves!
And did I play my Joker?
Yes I did! Though I got the answer wrong and it made no difference but I really wanted to play it so I 'm glad I remembered to!
What is the prize?
The winner gets a smart speaker but the real winner gets the mug and that's good enough for me!
So would I do it again?
Absolutely!
Actually it's not my 1st time on a radio game show. The 1st time was many moons ago at Uni. Again, spur of the moment. I think would have been Radio 1 with Sara Cox. I'm in my 40's now and I've moved over to Radio 2 accordingly....along with Sara Cox, Jo Whiley and the other greats that started on Radio 1.
